Programs in autumn

With the arrival of autumn, we do not have to give up on excellent outdoor programs, as the city of sunshine offers several options for relaxation for locals and visitors even on the cooler autumn days. The International Tisza Fish Festival is organized at the first weekend of September. The Huszár Mátyás Quay is full with people, in front of the Móra Ferenc Museum on the water bastion, the fish soup is made in the giant cauldron according to the traditional recipe from Szeged. Its most important ingredient, the ground paprika is carried by a witch who arrives by parachute, while the onion comes from Makó, through the River Maros, by raft. This year Partfürdő will also be an important venue of the event as the traditional fish soup making competition will take place there, and participants compete for one of the prizes of the Fish Cook Award founded by Sándor Frank, Venesz Prize winner master chef.

The gem of Szent István tér is the „Old Lady”, alias the water tower that await visitors on the first Saturday of each month. In case you miss to visit it on 7th September, you can try again between 13-15 September, within the Autumn Open Days.

The biggest air event of the country, the Szeged Air Show is held at the third weekend of September. Three days dedicated to flying and aircrafts: different air shows and exciting programs await visitors.

The official forerunner of autumn arrives on 18 September: the Wine Festival in Dóm tér. In the shadow of the Votive Church more than 80 noted wine makers offer their products. The gastronomic event includes great wines, excellent music and delicious meals.

St. Gellert Festival organized from 21to 30 September is a perfect program for classical music enthusiasts. The event features pieces that further enrich the colorful music life of Szeged and are real classical music rarities. The performances of the masterpieces represent such a new approach that is accepted also in the European capitals of music. The festival that this time celebrates the versatile friendship of Hungary and the Republic of Corea, offers special artistic and cultural experience also for the new generation of music lovers. The special athmosphere is provided by the unique acoustics of the Votive Church and the family athmosphere of the Votive Church Visitor Center.

The XV. Szeged Autumn Jewish Cultural Festival is organized from 1 September to 9 November. It features art exhibitions, book presentations and exciting concerts including Tóth Vera and the Budapest Jazz Orchestra, László Csanádi organist, Gergely Rákász concert organist and János Bródy.

The best chili manufacturers and chili enthusiasts meet again in Szeged in October. The Szeged Paprika Show and Chili Weekend, the hottest event of the year, is held  from 11 to 13 October in Széchenyi tér. Extra strong chili sauses, hot street food,  extravagant food trucks and the 1.000.000 HUF chili  eating contest await the most courageous visitors.

The Autumn Cultural Festival organized by the Szeged University NKI Cultural Office starts in October each year. The aim of the event is that besides the university’s art groups and students with artistic ambitions, well-known performers and artists can introduce to the audience in Szeged. The programs are open to everybody and most of them are free to visit.

Pumpkin day is a real family program organized for the 7th time this year in the Botanical garden and it includes pumpkin carving, pumpkin dishes, exhibition and the fair of artisan products.

The world famous TEDx event also comes to Szeged in October. The theme is: Smartly connecting world. It takes place in IH Event Center on 5 October.
