Szeged, the city of sunshine takes on its festive lights on 29 November and enchants visitors until 24 December. As the Christmas lights are on, the magic world of a fairy tale comes to life. In 2019 the holidays will again be held in Széchenyi tér, Klauzál tér and Dóm tér. Every day different programs await children and adults, offering relaxation and preparation for the coming holiday. The very popular giant ferris wheel with 144 seats will return to Széchenyi tér this year again with its beautiful view to the festive cavalcade, and a nearly 500 square meter open air pop-up ice rink will be built in Dóm tér.
The artisan Christmas fair is held in Dóm tér. In front of the Votive Church, there is the giant advent wreath of the city, whose candles are lit by the citizens on Sundays. The Fabulous Castle returns as well, and it houses an exhibition and children can participate in different activities or watch tales here as well. This year we can get lost again in the biggest straw labyrinth of South Hungary. Széchenyi tér is full with the well-known wooden eateries offering mulled wine and different specialties. Just like in the past years, we can count with a real gastronomic event. For Christmas gift inspiration see the artisan products. The 6-meter tall twinkling deer is waiting for those who wish to take a selfie, in Dugonics tér.
On the first three Sundays of December, a very exciting program arrives in Szeged, The Attic by Gábor Presser, Dusán Sztevanovity and Péter Horváth. The Attic – tale and musical – is the most exciting and mysterious place in the world, where grandpa’s rocking horse and grandma’s precious gramophone are just fine with satellites and other high tech gadgets. This is where Rádi escapes with his robot and other suspicious tools to work without distractions.
On 21 December the biggest retro hits come to the Sports Hall for the Big Szeged Retro Festival. The great atmosphere is provided among others by Neoton Família, TNT, Erika Zoltán, the Desperado, György Korda and Klári Balázs. Getting closer to the end of the year, there will be no shortage of concerts. On 14 December Tankcsapda, while on 30 December Rebulic and the Hooligans will give concerts on the stage of the Municipal Sports Hall.
On 17 and 18 December Cindarella ballet is on in the National Theatre, and if you are looking for a great Christmas treat, buy tickets for the ballet Nutcracker held on 21 and 22 December.
