The square in front of the Ferenc Móra Museum has become one of the city’s most popular recreational and cultural spaces in recent years. Following a comprehensive renovation, the area was equipped with new street furniture and an impressive fountain. On warm summer days, both locals and visitors regard the fountain area as a true oasis.
In 2022, the Hungarian Urban Planning Association awarded the city the Hild Prize for the sustainable and well-conceived renovation of the area around the Downtown Bridge, including Móra Park. The public monument commemorating the award, created by sculptor László Bánvölgyi, can be found here in the square.
Next to the museum’s staircase stand the statues of two former directors of the institution, Ferenc Móra and István Tömörkény. Along the promenade of the fountain facing the city center, there are bronze busts of the writer Kálmán Mikszáth, a former contributor to the daily newspaper Szegedi Napló, and János Reizner, former chief clerk of Szeged, library director, and founding director of the museum.
