Since 2009, the Szeged International Folk Dance Festival Foundation, on behalf of the Szeged Municipality, has organized the Szeged International Folk Dance Festival in even-numbered years, and in odd-numbered years, in collaboration with the György Martin Folk Dance Association, the György Martin Folk Dance Festival.
The first Martin Festival was established in 1999 with the aim of providing Hungarian and minority folk dance groups in Hungary, as well as Hungarian groups from abroad, a platform to showcase their work. At the festival, groups can present their new creations in front of a professional jury, who evaluates and awards their performances.
Since the 10th, jubilee edition, the Martin Festival has become a showcase for the youth age group. On one hand, there are very few opportunities in the country specifically tailored to this age group where serious professional evaluation and awards accompany the performances. On the other hand, this age group already possesses the dance skills to deliver a complete aesthetic experience, while their enthusiasm, passion, and dedication are unparalleled. Beyond performances, participants also take part in professional programs and workshops.
The program begins on Friday afternoon with a costume parade: the participating folk dance groups start from Széchenyi Square and make their way along Kárász Street to Dugonics Square, the venue for the opening ceremony. Along the way, they stop several times to entertain the public with marching dances. The following evening, they will showcase their talents in a folklore evening at the Kisszínház.
