As soon as the good weather arrives and we can finally escape the four walls, we have the chance to immerse ourselves in the beauty that nature has to offer. In addition to the many wonderful attractions of Szeged, we should not forget its outdoor treasures either the green oases that surround the city. We have gathered those locations where you can enjoy long walks and truly connect with nature.
Erzsébet-liget
Just about five minutes from the heart of the city center lies Erzsébet-liget, the largest park in Szeged, covering fifteen hectares. The area that is now the park was once a dense wilderness, transformed at the end of the 19th century. Even today, its borders are lined with towering plane trees, alongside grassy clearings and mature lindens, oaks, and maples.
This green oasis is perfect for a wide range of leisure activities. During recent renovations, outdoor fitness equipment and dog parks were added, and the running track was also modernized. It is an ideal location for a romantic walk or a relaxing picnic.

Holt-Maros
Formed from a former bend of the Maros River that was cut off during river regulation works in 1860, the Holt-Maros is an oxbow branch stretching over 4 kilometers in length and 10–15 meters in width. It runs like a green corridor through the heart of Szeged’s Újszeged district, welcoming visitors with impressive evergreens, reed-lined shores, blooming flowers, and an atmosphere of peace and quiet.
Nature thrives here despite the urban surroundings. The Holt-Maros is home to 143 bird species, including reed warblers, little bitterns, and great reed warblers. Marsh turtles and two species of protected beetles can also be found in the area.
In spring, visitors can witness the rebirth of nature along the Holt-Maros. It is a perfect destination for an early evening stroll or a relaxing weekend getaway, far from the noise of the city.

Gergő-Liget
This area is home to the remarkable flora and fauna of the floodplains along the Tisza and Maros rivers. It features trees of extraordinary size and variety, a rich array of flowers and fungi, and lush floodplain undergrowth. Alongside numerous waterfowl and woodland birds, visitors may occasionally spot roe deer and foxes.
From season to season and especially after extreme weather conditions the landscape undergoes significant transformations, continually offering new sights to discover. It is a favorite picnic destination for families and groups of friends, an open-air playground in nature for grandparents and grandchildren, and a peaceful walking route for both the young and the elderly.
