The Zsigmond Vilmos International Film Festival is one of the most prominent cultural events in Szeged, drawing attention to one of the most important yet often overlooked artistic fields of filmmaking: cinematography. The festival was established in memory of the world-renowned Hungarian cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond. After the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, Zsigmond emigrated to the United States, where he became one of the defining figures of modern filmmaking. His cinematography was recognized with an Academy Award in 1978 for his work on the film Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
The aim of the festival is to showcase the visual worlds of films created in different parts of the world and to place the creative role of cinematographers in the spotlight. The program includes short films, feature films and documentaries, which are evaluated by an international professional jury. In addition to screenings, professional discussions, audience meetings and workshops await visitors, creating opportunities for dialogue between film professionals and the audience.
Each year the festival attracts filmmakers and films from numerous countries to the Belvárosi Cinema, turning the city into one of the meeting points of the international film community for a few days. The event is not only an important platform for the film industry but also offers a special experience for film lovers. Visitors can discover works that enrich contemporary cinema with their outstanding visual solutions, atmosphere and imagery.
