The Szeged Open-Air Festival is the largest and one of the most prestigious open-air theatre events in Hungary, and for nearly a century it has been a defining part of Szeged’s cultural life. The idea of the event was first proposed in 1926 by the Szeged poet Gyula Juhász, who recognized the city’s unique potential for establishing a large-scale open-air theatre. The initiative was supported by numerous prominent figures of cultural and political life, and the first realization took place in the autumn of 1930 as part of the celebrations connected to the consecration of the Votive Church.
The program of the Szeged Open-Air Festival is extremely diverse. In recent years the repertoire has included grand operas, classical and contemporary musicals, prose theatre performances, as well as spectacular dance productions. The internationally acclaimed productions, outstanding Hungarian and foreign artists, and the impressive settings of Dóm Square and the Újszeged Open-Air Stage together make the event truly unforgettable.
