Szeged Advent, also known as the Szeged Christmas Weeks, is the city’s winter event series, traditionally beginning in the period before the first Sunday of Advent. The central location of the festive preparations is once again Dóm Square, where the historic surroundings and a rich program selection together create the unique atmosphere of the Advent season.
The square offers experiences for all age groups. Children can enjoy a straw labyrinth and a storytelling corner, while craft workshops allow them to make gifts and Christmas tree ornaments. Regular screenings of classic slide films also add color to the program. One of the spectacular highlights of the winter evenings is the enclosed-cabin Ferris wheel, which lifts visitors to a height of 50 meters, offering a breathtaking panorama of the downtown area dressed in festive lights. The Christmas market’s gastronomic offer focuses on traditional seasonal flavors, welcoming visitors with mulled wine, warm dishes, and sweets.
On the Sundays of Advent, public figures and church representatives from Szeged jointly light the candles on the city’s Advent wreath, reinforcing the community spirit of the celebration. Programs take place not only on Dóm Square, but also on Klauzál Square and Dugonics Square, while the entire downtown area becomes even more magical with festive decorations, a giant reindeer, and Santa’s sleigh.
