Ásotthalom

Ásotthalom

Ásotthalom is located 30 kilometers west of Szeged, close to the Hungarian–Serbian border. Since 2013, it has also functioned as a border crossing point. The surrounding area is known for hunting and viticulture, as in the early 19th century efforts were made to stabilize shifting sands through afforestation. The name Ásotthalom first appeared on a border map in 1778, referring to the settlements around a sand hill. From 1927 to 1975, a railway line connected the village with Szeged. In 2014, it was granted the title of large village (nagyközség).

Among its attractions is the Rózsa Sándor Élményház, which opened in the summer of 2014. Visitors are welcomed by a lifelike statue of the legendary outlaw Rózsa Sándor. The exhibition house also features a prison cell functioning as a wax museum. After touring the exhibitions, visitors can relax in the on-site cinema room, where they can watch the television film Rózsa Sándor from the comfort of real cinema seats. Near the 31st kilometer stone, a poplar tree can also be seen, which, according to legend, served as a hiding place for Rózsa Sándor during his escape.

For families with small children, the Dínópark is an attractive destination. It is located next to the Gárgyán Forest and covers nearly 6,000 square meters. Around the village there is also a forest reserve known as the Kiss Ferenc Emlékerdő, named in honor of Kiss Ferenc, who is regarded as the “father of the forests of Szeged.”

Ásotthalom is also home to a marsh meadow nicknamed “Csodarét” (Miracle Meadow), which was declared a protected natural area in 1992. In summer, the village hosts events such as the Rózsa Sándor Fesztivál and the Batátafesztivál. As an interesting fact, the infamous female contract killer known as Pipás Pista was born and raised here. The names Ásotthalom and Átokháza also appear in several works by Móra Ferenc.
