When the University of Kolozsvár moved to Szeged in 1922, the city donated a land of 20 kh to it to establish a botanical garden. The first plants were introduced by the founding director, István Győrffy. The botanic garden is still owned by the university, as a collection serving education and research, open to the public, as well. The garden presents agricultural species in a systematic way, including herbs, dye, fibre and food plants, but it also takes part in the preservation of protected plants. One of the curiosities of the collection is the Indian lotus, which arrived more than 80 years ago. In the lake fed by artesian water it found the living conditions appropriate for proliferation and now it represents the largest open-air stand in Central Europe.

The Botanical Garden is open on public holidays as well, except at Christmas and New Year.
On Monday, the greenhouses may be closed due to plant protection work.

Flying Flowers – Tropical Butterfly House in the Botanical Garden
A truly unique feature of the Botanic Garden is the tropical butterfly garden, where the main attraction is the exotic butterflies and the flying flowers of the animal kingdom. The enclosed, heatable foil tent, which easily warms up in summer, is an environment of exotic plants in which butterflies can live freely.
The species on display are native to Central and South America, bred on butterfly farms in Costa Rica, and the caterpillars are transported after pupation and then develop in the pupae hutch in the Botanic Garden. The butterflies emerge from the pupae, which are attached with insect pins, in 1-3 weeks. Hundreds of butterflies of up to 20 species can be observed at a time.
The two greenhouses attached to the tropical butterfly house welcome visitors to a special world of ferns and orchids.
Please note that the humidity (70%) and temperature (30-35°C) are high!

Empire of Scents at the Botanical Garden
The Empire of Scents is a herbal-based scent and experience house. Visitors can gain insight into how medicinal plants can become part of our everyday lives in various forms – such as through distillation, pressing, or extraction. We guide our guests into nature’s treasury of knowledge with informational publications, interactive programs for children and adults, as well as workshops and herbal products that can be tried on site.

The Empire of Scents can be visited free of charge; however, organized programs and workshops require a separate ticket. Tickets can be purchased in advance or on the day of the program at the Botanical Garden ticket office, with cash or card payment.
During the workshops, participants create skin- and environmentally friendly balms using herbal extracts and essential oils.
