The setting is New York, 1938, where we witness the stormy encounter of Tony, a workaholic and embittered young businesswoman, and Frank, a charming adventurer. The deck of the luxury liner La Paz, bound for Monte Carlo, is populated by a gallery of eccentric characters. Among them are Tony’s fiancé, a degenerate aristocrat of money; a brutal wife and her terrified little husband living under her reign of terror; a hesitant secretary whose life is twice transformed by a Tibetan singing bowl; and Tony’s irrepressibly high-spirited mother, who would like to look at least ten years younger than her own daughter.
On this adventure-filled sea voyage, everyone is fleeing from something—or chasing someone. Large sums of money are at stake, and anyone who can do so plays games with the hearts of others. Meanwhile, swing music reigns supreme aboard the luxury ship: the exhilarating sound of jazz’s most dazzling and still-living golden age.
American Comedy is a humor-rich story from beginning to end, brought to the stage on this occasion by Károly Peller. Based on the stage comedy of the same title by Károly Aszlányi, a highly successful playwright of the 1930s, the libretto and song lyrics were written by Attila Lőrinczy, with music by none other than Bálint Bársony, Artisjus and Fonogram Award-winning composer and saxophonist.
This swing musical is guaranteed to invite laughter and dance alike, delighting audiences at the Újszeged Open-Air Stage with a series of exuberant, summer-closing evenings.
