PERFORMANCE: July 4, 2026
Planned rain date: July 5, 2026
Let us remember together the turning points of Hungarian history through the shared language of our dance and musical culture!
Under the title Dawn of Heroes, Hungary’s largest professional dance ensemble, the Hungarian National Dance Ensemble, will present a spectacular and grand-scale dance drama on July 4 at the Szeged Open-Air Games – on the country’s largest open-air stage, which will also serve as the festive opening of the 2026 season on Dóm Square.
The first part of the performance evokes the foreboding times before the Battle of Mohács in the Dance Ensemble’s Dance Chronicle on the Deeds of György Dózsa, featuring actor József Wunderlich in the title role.
In the second act, Zsolt Zsuráfszky, Artist of the Nation and Kossuth Prize laureate, and Zsuzsa Zs. Vincze, Kossuth Prize-winning choreographer, present a world premiere of their unique stage dance vision. On the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Mohács, it draws attention to this enduring national tragedy with profound consequences in Requiem for Mohács.
Dózsa was destroyed at Temesvár, and soon after came Mohács. National tragedies followed one another, yet it speaks to the indestructible vitality of the Hungarian people that even amid these tragedies, they carried their human, national, and historical aspirations into the spirit. After Temesvár and Mohács, what we know as Hungarian literature was born, and Hungarian consciousness developed. Amid the shocks and collapses of the 16th century, national elevation occurred in the realm of the spirit. This is not only a century of despair, but also a century of Hungarian hope. – wrote Géza Féja in 1938.
Although the Hungarian National Dance Ensemble’s production tells of mournful times and heroes with tragic fates, its purpose is to highlight, alongside the touching and uplifting moments of shared memory, the spirit of unity, and the communal experience, the timeless beauty and strength of our culture, inspiring awe throughout the performance.
