Perhaps Imre Kálmán’s most iconic operetta, The Csárdás Princess, is coming to Újszeged in a production by the Szigligeti Theatre. This 110-year-old favorite continues to captivate audiences not only with its memorable hits but also with its social commentary and irresistible characters. Its world is set in the elegant milieu of the early 20th century, a time when Budapest’s cabarets were at the height of their popularity, and it also reflects the golden age of Hungarian theatre and cultural life in Oradea, as well as the flourishing Secessionist architecture of the city. This well-known story has thus found a fitting home at the riverside city’s theatre, whose artists now bring the dazzling operetta to the banks of the Tisza.
The large-scale production features the full ensemble of the Oradea Dance Company as the dance corps, while the 12-member choir is formed by the private singing department of the Partium Christian University. The operetta is accompanied by a 16-member orchestra.
The production won the Theatre Critics’ Award in 2024 for Best Entertainment Theatre Performance. At the 2025 Szemle Plusz, it received four accolades: Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Leading Actress, and the jury also awarded Eszter Novák, the director of The Csárdás Princess, for Best Direction. This award-winning production, admired by both critics and audiences alike, promises an unforgettable evening for the spectators of the Open-Air Theatre Festival.
