The legendary restaurant, known only as Hági by the locals, is located in a frequented spot in downtown Szeged, whose history dates back to the 19th century.
In 1856, the first permanent theater in Szeged opened in its place. After the great flood in Szeged, the building was resurrected by the city and the Haggenmacher Brewery bought the plot in 1896 for a beer hall, in which they built ground-floor shops, a restaurant and a beer shop, a courtyard garden, and 4-floor apartments. The restaurant gained huge popularity from the 1930s, it was the center of nightlife and a meeting place for the intelligentsia. Its walls were once decorated with pictures by István Szőnyi.
The restaurant, which was expanded several times on a large scale, closed in the mid-1990s and has been unused since then. In the spring of 2018, young entrepreneurs rented the restaurant with a long history from the owner.
We are currently waiting for visitors with indoor rooms, and with the arrival of good weather, a cozy terrace.
