The tourist attraction of the week: Szeged ZOO

If you are in Szeged, do not miss one of the must-see attractions, one of Hungary’s youngest and largest zoos. Primarily specialized in keeping rare and endangered species, the part of the park showing South American animals is particularly outstanding. When creating the animals’ living space, they tried to make them feel as at home as possible in a spacious area.

The history of Vadaspark dates back to 1989, so Szeged has not been able to boast of an animal park for very long, but in this short time it has become one of the most unique and popular attractions of its kind in Hungary.

When visiting zoos or reading the news in the press, we often come across the terms “species rescue program” or “breeding program”, or perhaps their foreign-sounding abbreviations: EEP and ESB. Unfortunately, very few people know what these programs mean, despite their great role in the nature conservation work of European and domestic zoos. This is particularly true of the Szeged Wildlife Park, where we can meet proportionally the most “programmed” species.

In addition to such rarities as maned anteaters, clawed monkeys, fossa, and mist-spotted panthers, visitors can also meet many popular zoo animals, from meerkats to giraffes, and even Asian elephants since 2018 and Indian rhinoceroses since spring 2020.

The collection, which can be visited almost every day of the year, treats its guests to zoo-pedagogic sessions, feeding shows, and occasional night tours.
